Abstract

1,156,492. Hand wheels. P. D. SPRINGALL Ltd. 29 June, 1966 [1 July, 1965], No. 27884/65. Heading B7J. A hand wheel comprises a rim connected by spokes to a hub wherein the rim is formed from an annular metal core, a sponge rubber &c. body, and an outer plastics (e.g. polyvinyl chloride) skin 9, the skin 9 being applied by wrapping sheet material around the body and securing it in place thereon. In an embodiment, the core comprises two annular channel-section elements 4, 5 welded together, to which is welded or riveted the outer ends of the spokes extending through slots in the element 4. The body comprises two halves 7, 8 glued together, and formed with finger grips. The skin 9 is high frequency welded at 10 to itself, and glued to the halves 7, 8. A layer of foam rubber (not shown) may be interposed between the body and the skin 9. In another embodiment, the core comprises an annular metal plate to either side of which are glued body halves. A textile reinforcement is provided under the skin 9. In a further embodiment, a sheath of plastics is moulded on to the outer portion of each spoke 2 to serve as a thumb-rest. In other embodiments, the core is solid circular-section rod, or is a circular-section tube; and the body is formed in one piece with an inner split, or is moulded around the core; and the spokes are stretched wire.
