Abstract

1,125,490. Steering wheels for motor vehicles. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 1 Oct., 1966, No. 43961/66. Heading B7J. A steering wheel for a motor vehicle comprises a rim 11 of steel tube (of the section shown in Fig. 3) covered by a layer 15 of cellulose-acetatebutyrate plastics. Indentations 12 being formed in the back surface of the rim 11 to provide finger grips. Two spokes 13, (14) also covered by the plastics layer, are formed by a single steel pressing and have a U-section, the depth of which decreases at the outer ends of the spokes so that they are flat when welded to the back of the rim 11. The hub 16 of the wheel is part of the same pressing as the spokes and is welded to a collapsible, energy absorbent corrugated structure 21 mounted on the upper end of the steering column (not shown). A pad 17 of energy absorbent material is supported on a steel pressing 18 secured by two bolts 19 (only one shown) to the spokes 13, (14).
