Abstract

1,155,421. Washbasins. M. FLAGG. 26 July, 1966 [4 Aug., 1965], No. 33443/65. Heading A4N. A washbasin in which the basin (10) is vertically movable relative to its support (11) and has an inlet (12) supplied with water via flexible pipes (13), and an outlet (15) connected by telescopic pipes such as (17) to outlets on an adjacent wall. The basin is supported by a bracket (23) which embraces the underside of the basin and has connected to its adjacent ends a pair of straight strips (24) which underlie marginal portions of the basin, said straps having pegs (25 and 26) which enter holes (not shown) in the basin to support same. A cuboidal block (27) is secured to the underside of the said bracket, the block itself being secured in one end of a length of square section tube (28) which is a telescopic sliding fit with another square section tube (29). In one embodiment the said support can be raised and lowered by a hydraulic system. A tube (31) is attached to the said cuboidal block said tube being preferably of circular cross-section and co-acting with a piston (32) carried on the end of a tubular stem (33) secured at its lower end to the plinth. The said piston, said circular tube and said cuboidal block form a sealed chamber into which liquid under pressure can be introduced to raise the basin. The space (34) between the tube (31) and the tube (28) acts as a reservoir for liquid from which liquid can be drawn and introduced into the said sealed chamber by means of a pump (38) and non-return valves (39 and 40). The basin can be lowered by means of a pedal valve (43) and connectors (41 and 36). In another embodiment (not shown) the hydraulic system can be worked from the mains water supply. In both of the above embodiments the basin can be locked in a selection position on the pedestal by one or more valves preventing the escape of liquid from the hydraulic means. In another embodiment (not shown) the basin may be raised by a hydraulic system in combination with a counter balancing system of pulleys and weights.
