Abstract

1,153,869. Building columns and frameworks. E. G. RENSCH. 7 June, 1966 [9 June, 1965; 21 Dec., 1965], No. 25279/66. Heading E1K. A column for use in a structural assembly comprises a plurality of angularly adjoining profile members such as 26, 27 or 28 Fig. 6 each having two arms at 60‹ to each other interconnected by a web so that the column is provided with a plurality of flanges to which other structural elements such as 18, 18a may be attached. The profile members may all be similar to the profiles 26 in which case all the column flanges are external, Fig. 1 (not shown) and Fig. 9, or may all be similar to the profiles 27 in which case all the column flanges are internal Fig. 2 (not shown). All of the profile members may be similar to the profiles 28, in which case the column flanges are alternately internal and external, Fig. 3 (not shown) or a mixture of different profiles may be used as in Fig. 7 (not shown) or in Fig 6, so that the column has both internal and external flanges. The structural elements 18, 18a are bolted to the column flanges. Access to an internal flange is effected by providing a window in the web of a profile through which the structural element is introduced. The elements 18, 18a may be comprised of a pair of back to back channels 19 Fig. 8 connected-together by bolts or rivets 19' and in use sandwiching column flanges between their ends. Alternatively the elements 18, 18a may comprise single channels such as 19 or of simple form (Fig. 4 (not shown). The columns may be connected by triangular units secured at their corners to the columns. The horizontal cross members and the profile members are preferably formed from aluminium or synthetic resin coated or galvanised sheet or bond steel.
