Abstract

1,148,217. Knitting. TEXTILE MACHINE WORKS. 15 May, 1967 [23 May, 1966], No. 22510/67. Headings D1C and D1K. Cable stitch patterning is produced on a straight-bar machine by transferring stitches of a group in a single course in opposite directions so that they cross each other to form the cable effect; the transferring being achieved by a single transfer point operated to successively transfer the loops in a single course. The machine has single point transfer mechanism as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,182,220, comprising a single transfer point 25 or a number of such single points 'spaced across the width of the division each of which is secured to. a bar 26 controlled by a pattern chain arrangement 41 adapted to be racked to position the point at any desired position over a group of needles. The point or points is or are normally held inoperative by a vertical cam bar 77 retaining the bar 26 in an inoperative position,. On cable stitch patterning being desired the bar 26 is released and a fashioning motion given to the points by shogging the main cam shaft 17 causing a follower 107 to engage one of a number of cams 115 and 118. During normal knitting and fashioning the follower engages cams 111 and 112 and is not operative to effect cabling. The follower, however, is capable of being shogged onto the cams 115 and 118 which control the sleeve cam of a unit 47 causing the individual points to move one or three needles in either direction. By suitable manipulation, therefore, the point bar first transfers a loop of a group in one direction followed by an adjacent loop being transferred in the opposite direction. The other stitches are transferred three needles in the opposite direction whereafter single needle transfer is achieved of the origirial loops to provide the cable effect as illustrated in sequence in Fig. 11. By provision of double needle spacing on a half gauge machine coarser patterning can be achieved.
