Abstract

1,144,819. Winches. THOMPSON BROS. (ENG.) Ltd. 30 Nov., 1966, No. 53685/66. Heading B8B. [Also in Division F2] A winch drum is driven by a pinion 3 on a shaft 4 connected to a primary drive shaft 11 by pulleys 8, 10 and a driving belt 9, a one-way clutch 12 being mounted between pulley 10 and shaft 11, while a second, oppositely acting, oneway clutch 18 is mounted between shaft 4 and a permanently engaged brake 15. When shaft 11 is driven to wind cable on the drum the clutch 18 freewheels so that brake 15 is ineffective, but on paying out cable from the drum the clutch 18 and brake 15 become effective, while clutch 12 and pulley 10 freewheel on shaft 11. A jockey pulley (not shown) bears against belt 9 and allows slip when the tension reaches a predetermined maximum.
