Abstract

Trays.-Relates to apparatus fitted with perforated trays for drying fruit, vegetables, &c. and consists mainly in supplying the heated air in a series of independent streams. Fig. 2 shows the arrangement for supplying the air to a single tray, but trays may be arranged in tiers and in multiple columns. Air is supplied to vertical channels 2, and passes into a series of independent pipes formed by dividing the conduit 3 by vertical and horizontal partitions. The air is delivered to the trays between plates 4, and after passing through the material is collected in independent streams by plates 9 and led to the channel 10, connected with a regeneration device. Pipes 15, Fig. 4, heated by low-pressure steam are arranged between the. trays at the various levels and are connected in parallel to a main supply pipe. In order to dry the air further, the chamber may be fitted with constantly moving endless bands 16 formed of cottonwool or other absorbent substance or formed double so as to enclose hygroscopic material. The bands are dried by passing round steam-pipes 17 arranged in chambers 18 between the drying chambers 14 and also outside the casing.
