Abstract

1,143,645. Four-wheel-drive vehicles, J. S. SPRAGUE. 5 Aug., 1966, No. 35151/66. Heading B7H. An off-the-road vehicle with a chassis 69 supported by four wheels 13, 14, 47, 48 has a power transmission system including in one integral unit 12 an engine, clutch 26, changespeed gear 29 and a differential 36, the output shafts 39, 41 of which extend from opposite ends longitudinally of the vehicle to differentials 44, 46 coupled to the wheels of the vehicle. One clutch element 26 is secured to an extension of the crank-shaft 18 and the other clutch element 78 is mounted on a shaft 23 which is rotatable on the crank-shaft extension and drives the shaft 31 of the change speed transmission through a gear pair 24,32. The wheels are driven from the differentials 44, 46 by drive shafts 49, 51, 57 and 58, each of which incorporates two universal joints, and are mounted on hubs which are suspended independently from the chassis and steered by rack and pinion steering mechanisms at each end of the vehicle incorporating pinions mounted on a shaft 73 which extends longitudinally of the vehicle and is connected to a steering wheel (74) (Fig. 1, not shown). The integral unit 12 permits the use of a short wheel-base which with the four-wheel steering provides the vehicle with a small turning radius.
