Abstract

[Also in Division G3] A valve comprises a closure 66 mounted on a stem 45, 63 actuated by a diaphragm 69 which partially defines a chamber 41 containing a liquid, a second chamber 52 serving as a liquid reservoir in communication with an actuating gas supplied through a conduit 5, 6, 7, and a liquid conduit 60, having a flow restriction 59 connecting the chamber 41 and 52. Flow of gas, e.g. steam, through the conduit 5, 6, 7 is controlled by a pilot valve 32 actuated by a diaphragm 37 and a spring 4. Upon a drop in pressure in the outlet of the main valve, connected to a tapping 25, the valve 32 is forced downwards to allow inlet pressure to flow through the conduit 5, 6, 7 and act on the liquid in the reservoir 50 to force it into the chamber 51 and act on the diaphragm 69 to open the closure 66. When the controlled fluid is steam, the liquid in the chamber 52 is condensate, which initially passes through the conduit 5, 6, 7. Condensate is also allowed to pass around the stem 66, 45 into the chambers 64 and 65. If the controlled fluid is a non-condensable gas, liquid may be added to the chambers 41, 52, 64 and 65. The control pressure signal at the tapping 25 may be supplied from a temperature sensitive transducer. The pilot valve may be actuated by a form of motion other than the diaphragm 37.
