Abstract

A combined fluid-pressure regulating and relief valve has its inlet 3, Fig. 2, connected to the outlet 25 via an inlet chamber 2, an opening 4, Fig. 1, and an expansion chamber 5, Fig. 2, the opening 4 being controlled by the lower conical end 9, Fig. 1, of a movable valve closure member 6, the opposite end of which embodies two differently sized and axially spaced conical portions 11, 12 that coact with stepped parts 19, 20, respectively, of a bore 18 through an element 15. The chamber 5, Fig. 2, is separated from a space 22 in the valve bonnet 24 by a diaphragm 14 that supports the element 15, which latter is loaded by an adjustable spring 17; the space 22 is provided with an exhaust port 23. The position of the end 9 in the opening 4 is determined by the amount of deflection of the diaphragm 14 in response to the fluid pressure in the chamber 5. Any increase in pressure in the latter after the end 9 is fully seated, opens the bore 18, whereupon the chamber 5 communicates with the exhaust port 23 through the space 22.
