Abstract

1,142,615. Compaction by compression and vibration. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO. Ltd. 4 July, 1966 [3 July, 1965], No. 28274/65. Heading B5A. Articles are produced by multiple impacting of powder by oscillating the tool elements for advance and withdrawal simultaneously into a die containing the powder, the oscillation of one tool element being transmitted to the other through the powder mass, the die being oscillated at an amplitude and frequency different from the tool elements. The apparatus comprises one or more punches movable into and out of a die, preferably all being oscillated simultaneously. Preferably, the die is arranged between an upper and lower punch, which may each be supported by resilient means e.g. one or more springs and a damping device. Alternatively, both punches may be provided with vibrating means, there being a mechanical, electrical or hydraulic linkage therebetween to maintain synchronization.
