Abstract

1,137,413. Arc rupturing in switches; discharge tubes. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A.B. 14 April, 1966 [15 April. 1965; 24 May, 1965], No. 16333/66. Headings H1D and H1N. To interrupt an A.C. or D.C. circuit without excessive arcing, a gas discharge valve is connected in series with a circuit-breaker or isolating switch and is provided with means to change at least one of its parameters so that the discharge in the valve changes from a plasma condition with a low arc voltage drop to a space charge condition with a high voltage drop. When it is desired to open the circuit, a switch in parallel with the valve is first opened so that the current is shunted through the valve and reduced by the valve before the series circuitbreaker or isolator is opened. The nature of the discharge in the valve may be changed by reducing the strength of a magnetic field, Fig. 2 (not shown), reducing the effective diameter of the valve using iris type diaphragms 11, Fig. 3, in the valve, or by admitting a small quantity of gas to the valve to initiate the lowvoltage arc-discharge and then evacuating the valve to change the discharge to its high voltage condition, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown).
