Abstract

1,137,012. Automatic circuit breakers; contact arrangements. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 30 March, 1967 [14 April, 1966], No. 14547/67. Heading H1N. In a heavy current automatic circuit breaker, the contact structure comprises a pivotal carrier 73 coupled to an overcentre spring toggle actuating mechanism 53; a movable arcing contact 97 connected to one terminal 23 of the breaker by a flexible conductor 131 and cooperating with a fixed arcing contact 29 connected to the other terminal; and a movable main bridging contact 99 co-operating with fixed main contacts 33, 43 connected respectively to the two terminals, the movable main and arcing contacts being pivotally mounted upon the carrier 73 at 101 in such a way that, during opening, the first break is at contact 33, the second at 43 and finally at the arcing contact 29. To this end the main contact 99 is biased away from carrier 73 by two springs (111, 115), (Figs 5-7, not shown), on opposite sides of pivot 101 while the arcing contact 97 is biased anticlockwise about 101 by a spring 105. Any are produced at the main contacts, due to the high resistance of the arcing contacts and conductor 131, is thus produced at the contacts nearest to an arc-chute 147. The circuit breaker is provided with a tripping device as described in Specification 911,934.
