Abstract

827,431. Automatic circuit-breakers; arc rupturing in switches. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Dec. 10, 1957 [Dec. 24, 1956], No. 38340/57. Class 38 (5). An air-break circuit-breaker having line terminals 9, 41, at opposite ends of the base 2 and fixed and moving contacts 5, 11 adjacent the terminal 9, includes an arc-chute 45 containing spaced conducting plates 61, 66-68 and formed with a chimney extension 50 venting the arc gases through the side of the circuit-breaker cover 3. The slotted plates 61, 66-68, which are preferably magnetic, are interleaved with slotted gas-evolving fibre plates 71 and the whole is enclosed in a U-shaped fibre wrapping 46. The moving contact arm 12, carrying the contact 11, is pivoted at 13 to a switch arm 14 mounted on a pivoted tie-bar 15. A pivot pin 22 connects lower toggle link 19 with the switch arm 14, the pin passing through a slot in the contact arm 12 so forming a lost-motion connection between arms 12, 14. Upper toggle link 18 is pivoted at 23 to releasable cradle 24 and the knee pivot 21 is connected by tension springs 27 to a lever 28 carrying the operating handle 29. The breaker is tripped by a trip-bar 35 actuated by a screw 36 at the outer end of a bimetallic strip 37.
