In a transverse-flow fan for a hair dryer, a guide 23' extends generally lengthwise of the rotor 2 with its cross-section approximately aligned with or parallel to a tangent T to the rotor from a sharp or rounded nose 13. This has the effect, for a given restriction R, of so controlling the vortex core CR as to increase the effective throughput cross-section at A-A and avoid excessive divergence of diffuser portion D. The guide may be slightly inclined to the rotor axis (as seen in a projection on to an axial plane) or portions of the guide may be inclined (by 10 to 15 degrees) in alternate directions to reduce noise. The crosssection of the guide may be slightly bent, have rounded ends or be of elongated elliptical form. The guide my be moulded from plastics. A pocket 15 may converge in the direction of rotor rotation less than the amount shown or not at all. The guide may lie on the pocket side or the outlet duct side of the tangent T, preferably by a distance not exceeding a rotor blade chord. The surface 11 of wall 10 subtends an angle of less than 30 degrees at the rotor axis.
