Abstract

The invention relates to a jet propulsion unit which comprises a main jet type compressor, a main combustion chamber having a gas discharge duct, an auxiliary jet type compressor, an auxiliary combustion chamber having a gas discharge duct, and single or duplicate main and auxiliary propulsion nozzles disposed at opposite ends and at one or both sides of the engine. In the embodiment shown the air intake is indicated at 6, and the main jet type compressor comprises two stages, the first stage being indicated at 8 and the second stage at 8', the compressor comprising four units 8 and 8' in parallel. The air and gas mixture discharges from the compressor into a chamber 11 from which it passes into a series of flame tubes 12 in parallel, the combustion gases discharging from the flame tubes into a duct 19 which terminates in one or a pair of main jet propulsion nozzles 21 which may be swivelled to control the direction of jet discharge. Combustion gases are tapped off from the duct 19 and pass through ducts 23, 23' to the nozzles 4, 5 to constitute the working fluid of the first and second stages of the jet type compressor. Fuel is supplied to the flame tubes 12 through injector means 18. The plant is started by means of air under pressure contained in reservoir 1d which is supplied to the duct 23 and so to the nozzles 4, 5. The plant comprises also an auxiliary jet type compressor 29 which has an air inlet 30 controlled by a valve 36a and a nozzle 28 which is supplied with gases tapped from the chamber 11 through duct 26 under control of valve 37. The air and gas mixture discharges from the auxiliary compressor 29 into an auxiliary combustion chamber 32a, the gases discharging therefrom into a duct 33 which terminates in one or a pair of auxiliary jet propulsion nozzles 34. Combustion gases may be tapped off the duct 33 and supplied through duct 35 under the control of valve 36 to the nozzle 28 of the auxiliary jet type compressor to constitute the working fluid thereof. The auxiliary nozzle or nozzles 34 is or are also angularly adjustable. Arrangements are provided whereby liquid oxygen may be supplied to the nozzle 1a in the intake chamber of the first stage of the main jet type compressor.
