Abstract
1,038,206. Grinding. GUSTAV GOECKEL MASCHINENFABRIK G.m.b.H. Oct. 21, 1964 [Oct. 22, 1963], No. 42826/64. Heading B3D. A device for lapping angled edges, such as tool edges, comprises one or more first lapping rings or discs 1, Fig. 1, arranged at an angle with respect to one or more second lapping rings or discs 2. The first rings 1 are mounted on a frame 4 and are driven through a bolt or chain drive or, as shown, a gear-box 6 from a motor 8, and the second rings 2 are similarly mounted and driven on a frame 5 which is adjustable relative to the frame 1 to an angle corresponding to the angle of the cutting edge 20 of the tool to be sharpened. Each frame carries a pair of rollers 10, 11 for supporting the tool, the rollers being out of alignment with the cutting edge. The first rings 1 alternate with the second rings 2 and intersect at a line 20, Fig. 2 (not shown), to effect sharpening of the edge. Each lapping ring may be resiliently urged towards the cutting tool by a spring 16 acting on an enlargement 14 on the shaft 15 of the ring, a collar 13 limiting the forward position of the ring. The shaft is housed in a bearing 17 screwthreaded into the frame 18 and secured by a locking ring 19. In another embodiment, the second rings are smaller than the first and rotate partly within cavities in the first larger rings. The lapping rings may be individual adjustable to vary the angle between the rings along the frames. The speed of the individual rings may also vary along the frames, increasing from one end to the other and the rings towards the latter end may effect a fine lapping. The direction of rotation of the rings may be the same or differ either between the first and second rings or between individual rings. A wetting device may be provided for cleaning the rings.
