Abstract

1,131,951. Coating by hot dipping. HITACHI Ltd. & NISSHIN STEEL CO. Ltd. Dec. 8,1965 [June 8, 1965; June 9, 1965], No.52131/65. Heading C7F. A steel strip 104 is continuously coated by hot dipping by moving it through a coating metal bath 103 and then upwardly away therefrom e.g. by being guided by bottom and deflector rolls 101 and 102, and directing a gas jet from means disposed on opposite sides of the coated strip on to the still non-solidified metal film coated on the strip in a direction opposite to the strips advancing direction, to blow away any excess metal from the metal film thereby forming metal films of any desired thickness on the opposite sides of the strip. The gas jet may be compressed air, nitrogen, steam or combustion gas. The directing means may be a pair of apron-like members 105 disposed on opposite sides of the strip to define throats 112 therebetween, each member having a horizontal upper wall 106 and parabolic lower wall 111; a sealing member 109 e.g. of asbestos or glass fibre may be fitted in a support frame 107 on each upper wall 106 to seal with each strip side. Both sealing members and apron-like members may be movable towards and away from the strip, e.g. by piston rods 110 and 122 respectively. The moving strip may be held at predetermined position between the gas directing to maintain its rectilinearity by two pairs of holding rolls, one below the bath surface and the other above the gas directing means(see Fig.3 not shown). Baffle plates 125 may be disposed below the gas directing means to prevent turbulence. The coating metal may be Zn, Zn-Al, Sn, Sn-Pb or Al. Specification 935, 516 is referred to.
