Abstract
In the production of sheet glass by casting on to a continuous conveyer belt 3 passing through a heating chamber 1, the upper run of the belt rests on a bath 5 of molten metal 6 to give a flat surface, the belt 3 having a top protective coat, e.g. of colloidal graphite, to prevent sticking of the glass 12 and an undercoat, e.g. of vitreous enamel, to prevent friction with the molten metal. The protective coats are sprayed on to the belt as at 10 and 11 just prior to the entry of the belt on to the molten metal 6. The heating chamber 1 is sealed by gate valves 2 and an atmosphere of N2 maintained above the bath. The belt 3 overlaps the bath 5 at each side, the edges being supported as by graphite inserts 8 extending upwardly <PICT:1121743/C1/1> from the side walls or, in an alternative arrangement, by rollers (9) closely adjacent to the walls of the bath 5.
