Abstract

1,130,792. Roll-changing apparatus. DAVY & UNITED ENG. CO. Ltd. 14 Jan., 1966 [26 Jan., 1965; 4 Feb., 1965], Nos. 3350/65 and 4824/65. Heading B3M. The roll changing apparatus in a 4 high mill comprises a circular turntable 16, which supports a new set of work rolls 12C, Figs. 1 and 2, and receives the work rolls 12D to be replaced, and a cylinder arrangement 40, for removing the back-up rolls 13, 14, the whole of the roll change assemblies being located on one side of the mill. Work roll chocks 12A have wheels 12B which run on rails 29 in the mill 27 carried on a fixed platform 28, and rails 26 on the turntable 16, when the rolls are to be changed. Turntable 16 is supported by wheels 21 running on a circular track 22, and is moved around the track to remove rolls 12D, or to present a new set of rolls 12C to the mill, by an electric motor 23, which drives a pinion 25 co-operating with a ring gear 25A on the turntable. The turntable has two pairs of rails 26, either of which can be aligned with rails 27, and the turntable along with its support 32 is movable along guides 33 by a piston 34. A chock engaging means passes through passages in the turntable, and is moved by a rack and pinion driven by an electric motor 38, and a gear-box 39, the rack being adapted to be withdrawn from the turntable to allow the latter to be rotated. When the back-up roll assemblies are to be changed, the work roll assemblies are first removed on to the turntable, the turntable is withdrawn, and cylinder 40 withdraws the back-up roll assemblies on a skid. In a modification, Figs. 4-7 (not shown) turntable (16) is located remote from the mill, withdrawal of the work rolls is accomplished by a chain-like arrangement (53) driven by a sprocket (52), Fig. 4 (not shown), or by a flexible track (60) having dogs (61) to engage the pins (55) of the chain. Fig. 5 (not shown), the flexible track being wrapped around wheels 62, one or both of which may be driven.
