Abstract
1405622 Rolling mills DAVY-LOEWY Ltd 22 Feb 1973 [6 March 1972] 10285/72 Heading B3M A roll change assembly for a four-high mill stand includes a beam 32 which is longitudinally movable towards and away from the stand and which can be coupled to either the work or back-up rolls to remove them from the stand. A trolley is also provided for removing the piston-cylinder assemblies 13 positioned beneath the lower back-up roll 14 for adjustment of the roll gap. To remove the work rolls 25, the assemblies 13 lower the rolls 14 and 25 until the work roll chocks are supported on rails 29. Roller assemblies 27 having recirculating rollers serve to support the chocks. A hook 42 carried at the end of the beam 32 is pivoted by an actuator 44 until it engages a hook 43 on a lower work roll chock, and the beam is moved to the left to withdraw the rolls from the stand. A lifting beam 60 removes the rolls and can replace them with new set, if desired. If one or both back-up rolls are to be changed, to further hook 40 on the beam 32 is caused to engage a wheeled sled 16 beneath the lower roll 14. After the roll has been suitably lowered, the wheels of the sleds engage further rails 18 (beneath the rails 29) and the beam can withdraw the roll or rolls from the stand as before. The beam 32 is moved by a rack and pinion drive 37 and is supported by wings 33, Fig. 3, within a pit 20. The hook 42 extends between a gap in removable floor plates 30. To remove the piston-cylinder assemblies 13, a trolley 50, Fig. 4, is placed on the further rails 18 (after removal of the lower back-up roll) and is moved above one such assembly 13. Vertically movable rods 56, which are moved in unison by motor-driven screw jacks, are coupled to the assembly and then raised. The trolley is then shifted along the rails by the beam 32 until the assembly can be positioned in the dotted-line position of Fig. 1. The other assembly is moved in a similar manner, the beam 60 being used to change the assemblies for new ones.
