In an hydraulic coupling the trailing edge portions of the pump wheel blades 1 are reversely inclined to the direction of wheel motion while the trailing edge portions of the turbine wheel blades 2 are inclined in the direction of motion, the leading edges of the repective blades being modified to further reduce tip losses. As shown in Fig. 3 the blades are flat or planar, the trailing edge sections tapering to points and the leading edges being rounded off. In the arrangement according to Fig. 4 the blades are flat and sets of guide vanes 3, 3<SP>1</SP> are mounted immediately in front of the blade leading edges. In a further arrangement, Fig. 5 (not shown), the leading edges of the blade are curved for correct entry. The leading edges of the pump wheel blades may be radial and those of the turbine wheel forwardly or backwardly inclined, Fig. 6 (not shown), and the blade lengths may be reduced by setting back the blade entry edges of each wheel in relation to the trailing edges of the other wheel, Figs. 5 and 8 (not shown).
