Abstract

1,126,990. Producing polypropylene filaments. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 12 Aug., 1965 [17 Aug., 1964], No. 41508/67. Divided out of 1,122,828. Heading B5B. [Also in Division D1] Non-woven sheet material is formed of polypropylene fibres or filaments having the following properties: crystallinity index (determined by comparing crystalline and amorphous peaks in a scan obtained in an X-ray diffractometer) of 30 to 70; not more than 25% having a birefringence of less than 0À02; and coefficient of variation of birefringence at least 5%. This variation may be obtained by using filaments having segments of higher and lower orientation along their length. In Example 5, polypropylene filaments are spun, drawn over a heated roll with grooves formed in its surface, the filaments are then drawn, so that the warmer portions, that contacted the roll, are oriented more than the cooler portions that lay in the grooves.
