Abstract

930,139. Fibrous fabrics. CARL FREUDENBERG KOMM.-GES. AUF AKTIEN. July 15, 1959 [July 17, 1958 (2)], No. 24396/59. Class 42 (2). A method of making non-woven bonded fibre sheet comprises the steps of preparing a web of fibres of polyamides, polyesters, polyvinyl compounds, cellulose acetate or mixtures thereof at least part of which has a length of over 20 mm. and of which 5 to 50% have a melting or softening point which is at least 10 ‹ C. below the melting or softening point or decomposition temperature of the other fibre fraction, passing said fibre fleece through equally spaced rolls heated to about the melting or softening point of the lower melting fibre fraction, impregnating the thus resulting porous bonded fibre fleeces with an aqueous dispersion of synthetic resins of the group comprising polyvinyl chloride, maleic acid etherified with an alcohol having from 2 to 6 C-atoms, butadiene styrene, butadieneacrylonitrile or mixtures thereof so as to incorporate 10 to 40% of said resin based upon the weight of the dry fibre fleece, drying said impregnated fibre fleece at a temperature of about 100‹ C. and subsequently simultaneously subjecting it to a temperature of 50‹ to 150‹ C. and a pressure of 50 to 150 atmospheres. As shown in Fig. 1, bonding of the fibres is effected initially in consequence of activation of the binder fibres by passing the web between two spaced heated rollers without appreciable pressure. The web is then impregnated with resins whereupon the voids between the fibres are filled as shown in Fig. 2. The web is then subjected to a smoothing operation between heated calender rolls and emerges as shown in Fig. 3.
