Abstract
1,126,461. Improving physical properties. WILKINSON SWORD Ltd., and UDDEHOLMS A.B. 14 Sept., 1965 [2 April, 1964], No. 13567/64. Headings B3A and B3V. [Also in Division C7] A method of manufacturing razor blade strip from steel which, at an elevated temperature, contains metastable austenite comprises reducing the cross-section of at least one edge of the strip at said temperature to deform the austenite, and subsequently cooling the strip to transform the austenite to martensite. The process hardens the edge and increases toughness, fatigue strength and proof stress. Corrosion-resistant steels that may be used contain 10-20% Cr. They may also contain :- In an example, a strip of blades joined endto-end is annealed at 800-1200‹ C. in a furnace to form austenite. A cooling muffle reduces the strip-temperature as the strip is passed to a press where the edges are deformed between 30 and 95% at 300-800‹ C. An inert or reducing atmosphere, e.g. of cracked ammonia, may be maintained in the furnace, muffle and the press. Instead of using a press, the whole strip may be reduced by rolling or forging to deform the austenite. On leaving the press, the strip is hardened by quenching between water-cooled chill blocks, by natural cooling or by quenching in water or oil. Further cooling to minus 78‹ C. may follow. The edges may be finished at least partly by the electrolytic process described in Specification 1,096,411, to which reference is made. The blades may be given a polymer coating. Specification 1,126,462 is referred to.
