Abstract

1,030,939. Making poppet valves. EATON MANUFACTURING COMPANY. Dec. 8, 1964 [Jan. 10, 1964], No. 49964/64. Heading B3A. [Also in Division F1] In a process for making a poppet type engine valve, a blank is provided from metal of the group consisting of carbon steel and low-alloy steel containing approximately 0À03-0À60 carbon by weight and up to 5% by weight of intentional alloying constituents. The blank is cold formed, straightened and machined, and may be annealed before and after cold forming. The machined blank is case hardened, quenched and machined to final dimensions. After hardening the blank may be drawn or tempered and the tip subjected to localized hardening treatment. The finished valve surfaces have a hardness of at least 20 Rockwell C Scale and the tip at least 50 Rockwell C Scale.
