Abstract

1,126,164. Packaging-machines. SONOCO PRODUCTS CO. 19 June, 1967 [21 April, 1967], No. 28112/67. Heading B8C. A machine for setting up and closing cartons has a hopper 38, 44 for holding flattened cartons, e.g. of the type in Fig. 13, the bottom carton in the stack being movable by a reciprocating transfer and squaring means 106 to a carton filling station where it abuts and is opened against retractable stops 96. Folding and tucking devices at either end of the filling station and initially in an inoperative position close end flaps after the carton is filled manually and then return to the inoperative position. The stops 96 then retract and the squaring means moves back to the right, Fig. 4, allowing pusher elements 121a to which the squaring means is operatively connected to move to the left, pushing the carton clear of the filling station. With an erected carton in the filling station an operator inserts an article and initiates, by operating a switch, the carton closing and following setting-up cycle. Opposed pairs of folders 53, 54, 72, 73, Figs. 4, 7, 9, move towards each other across each carton and fold in flaps 18, 19, 26, 27. One pair 53, 54 is adjacent the upper wall 16 of the carton at one end, the other, 72, 73, adjacent the lower wall 17. The folders 53, 54 remain in position while a member 62 moves down from its inoperative position and folds tab 31, Fig. 11. The folders 53, 54 withdraw and member 68 also moving down folds panel 29, tab 31 guided for tucking during this folding by a curved guide 80a. At the other end of the carton, the folders 72, 73 remain in position while a member 91 moves up to fold the tab 23, Fig. 9. Member 91 remains in position while members 72, 73 withdraw. A member 86 now rises to fold up panel 22 and tuck in tab 23, the surface of member 91 acting as a guide. Then the stops 96 are lowered and the squaring means 106, connected by belts 111 (112), Fig. 2 (not shown), to pushers 121a, move back, causing the pushers to move forward and eject the carton from the filling station and be taken away by a conveyer &c.
