In a lifting apparatus (e.g. for lifting vehicles) comprising a pair of side frames 2 connected together by cross beams 4, a vertical fluid ram 6 is mounted on each side frame and the two rams are selectively operable either to move in unison, in which case they are interconnected by detachable load supporting members 13, or to move independently, in which case one ram drives a crane carriage along the cross beams 4 and the other ram controls a load supporting cable depending from the carriage. Fig. 2 shows the case in which the rams 6 move in unison, and each is coupled to a cradle 11 roller guided along the open girder construction frame 2, catches 14 being provided to prevent accidental lowering of the cradles. Each frame 2 is mounted on wheels 5 for mobility but is jacked up during operation. In the embodiment of Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) the cradles are operated by ropes or chains which are attached at their ends to the cradles and the side frames, and intermediate their ends pass over roller pulleys on the side frames and the rams such that the movement of the cradles is twice that of the rams. In the case in which the rams move independently, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the load is lifted by a hook on the depending cable and the carriage is moved by cable transmission from the associated ram.
