Load lifting and lowering apparatus of the form comprising a platform 5 slidably mounted in vertical guides 2, forming part of a rigid framework F, and a horizontally disposed hy. draulic cylinder 15 and ram 16 device of which the ram 16 is operative on the platform 5 through the medium of two cables C<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>2</SP> which are connected with opposite ends of the platform 5 and are passed to and fro over and around respective sets of pulleys 22, 32, 23, 33, 24, 18 and 27, 35, 26, 34, 25 is characterized in that the ends of the cables C<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>2</SP> remote from the platform 5 are anchored to a movable trolley 28 arranged to make surface contact only with the outer end of the ram 16. The trolley 28 runs on rollers 29 in guides (30), Fig. 5 (not shown). The pulley and cable arrangement provides a cabling factor of 5/1; when a factor of 3/1 is required pulleys 23, 26, 33, 34 are removed and replaced by spacers. The apparatus may be applied to static lift installations as in warehouses and factories or to lorries and like transport vehicles where the platform forms a tailgate or tailboard. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to the Specification 776,002.
