In a method of measuring the voltage U E of a source G, the source is applied in series with a known D.C. bias voltage U o to a Gunn effect device P r . The bias is adjusted until the critical electric field necessary to produce oscillations is reached, as indicated by the instrument A. From the known value of the field, the source voltage is deduced. To ascertain whether U E lies within a given range, two different values of bias may be used, corresponding to the required limits.
