Abstract

The initial beam is split into two (A, B) in a beam splitter (2). One beam (A) is used to study the phenomenon (P) and the other beam (B) undergoes a linear phase rotation using an electro-optic crystal (3) and the beam modified by the phenomenon under investigation is allowed to interfere with the phase rotated beam on a detector (7). The electrical signal produced by this detector is applied to a phase-sensitive detector (8) which provides a final output signal which is characteristic of the modification introduced by the phenomenon (P). An electronic generator (9) and a signal shaping unit (10) are used to obtain the phase rotation of one of the beams and to obtain also a reference signal for the phase-sensitive detector (8).
