Abstract

A circuit arrangement for measuring electrical energy (in a power network 1) incorporates a mark space modulator 4, which in use is controlled by the voltage in the network 1 to provide an output signal which controls a selector switch 5 to determine at the output of the switch the polarity of a current proportional signal applied to the input thereof. The input to the switch is formed by a current transformer 3 in response to the current in the network 1, so that the mean value in time of the signal at the output of the selector switch is proportional to the product of the voltage and current in the network. The output signal is supplied to a current frequency converter 11 including an operational amplifier 12, which delivers a series of pulses whose frequency is proportional to the product, for subsequent counting at 18. The selector switch 5 may be two pole, as shown in Fig. 1, or the circuit between the current transformer 3 and the operational amplifier 12 may be adapted to operate with a single pole switch by using a centre, tapped transformer Fig. 2 (not shown) or operating on alternate half cycles Fig. 3 (not shown). The selector switch may be formed from field effect transistors controlled by the pulses from the mark-space modulator Fig. 4, (not shown).
