Abstract

1,120,191. Combing machines. N. SCHLUMBERGER & CIE. 30 Sept., 1965 [23 Oct., 1964], No. 41492/65. Heading DIN. In a rectilinear comber the detaching roller 2, of the reciprocating, web detaching device is driven with the reciprocating rotation motion required to intermittently feed back the web end for joining and yet ensure an overall advance of the web. The roller is driven by a chain 4 or other drive element which is subject to the simultaneous action of two independent drive systems at least one of which has a variable and reversible action. In Fig. 1, chain 4 runs over guide wheels 6, 7 carried by spring biassed chain tensioners 10, 11 on a beam 5 rotationally oscillated on a shaft 17 by a crank plate 19 and connecting rod 18. Chain 4 also engages a chain wheel 24 mounted on shaft 17 and constantly rotated from the shaft 27 of crank plate 19. Chain 4 is thus subjected to the constant drive of chain wheel 24 and to an oscillating drive due to the rocking motion of beam 5. When the two components are opposed the component due to the rocking beam overrides that due to wheel 24 and roller 2 is backwardly rotated to present a web end for joining. The positions of the pivots of connecting rod 18 and the size of pinion 26 driving chain wheel 24 are adjustable so that the motion of detaching wheel 2 can be adjusted for different conditions. Stationary wheels (30, 31) Fig. 3 not shown, may deflect chain (4) to provide an arrangement in which movements of beam (5) cause larger movements in the chain (4). In Fig. 4, not shown, a larger wheel is provided in place of chain wheel 24 and the chain 4 is arranged to engage it over a greater arc.
