Abstract

A strip or wire feeding apparatus comprises a pair of feed rolls driven through unidirectional driving devices by a reciprocable rack so that a drive will be transmitted by one of the said devices when the rack moves in one direction and the other device when the rack moves in the opposite direction, the feed rolls rotating in a direction to feed the strip or wire by a predetermined amount in a given direction irrespective of the direction of rack movement, the rack having a slotted extension which projects transversely of the rack and with which is engaged a roller mounted eccentrically on a rotatable driving member. A rack 10 has a transverse extension 14 with a slot 13 in which runs a roller 12 mounted on a slide 15 so as to be adjustable on a rotatable driving member to vary the stroke of the rack 10. There is clearance between the roller 12 and the slot 13 so that there is a dwell at each half revolution of the driving member. The rack engages two input gears 16a and 17a each associated with a free-wheel arranged to operate in opposite senses so that the corresponding output gears (only 16b is shown) also rotate in opposite directions. The gear 17a drives the output gear which drives the feed rolls through a gear train and the gear 16b drives the rolls through an idler gear so that the rolls rotate in the same direction whatever the direction of movement of the rack.
