Abstract
A steel which contains up to 0.25% carbon, at least 0.012% total nitrogen of which at least 0.01% is combined with Al and optionally also one or more of Be, Nb, V, Ti or Zr is heat treated as follows:-1. Heated to above 1300 DEG C. 2. Cooled, the range 1250 DEG -1050 DEG C. being passed through in ten minutes or less i.e. at a mean cooling rate of at least 20 degrees/min. 3. Cooled through the range 750 DEG -600 DEG C. in at least ten minutes i.e. at a mean cooling rate of at most 15 DEG C./min or held at any temperature in this range for at least ten minutes and 4. Reheated to a temperature above the A3 transformation point. The steel may then be quenched and tempered or be normalized (step 5). During step 2 the steel may be hot worked concurrent to cooling and steps 3 and subsequent ones may be repeated twice or more. After step 3 the steel may be cooled to ambient temperatures and in the reheating to above the A3 point the range 600 DEG -750 DEG C. is traversed in 10 minutes or more or the temperature is held in this range for at least 10 minutes.
