Abstract

Steel sheet, which may be hypo- or hypereutectoid, is austenitised at the lowest possible temperature and is then passed through rolls or dies whereby it undergoes 1-20% reduction in thickness and is simultaneously cooled to below the nose of the transformation curve. It is then allowed to air cool through the martensitic transformation range after which it may be tempered to any desired hardness. Hypoeutectoid steel may be austenitised at not more than 50 DEG F. above Ac3 and hypereutectoid steel at not more than 50 DEG F. above Ac1, while the sheet may enter the rolls between 50 DEG F. above and 25 DEG F. below Ac1. The product may be used for cutting tools.
