Abstract

A homogeneous liquid cement of paint-like consistency comprises a mixture of 25-55 wt. per cent BaCO3 powder and 75-45 wt. per cent aq. sodium or potassium silicate soln. having solids content 20-50 wt. percent. In the silicate the mole ratio SiO2/M2O is 1-5. Also present may be up to 30 wt. per cent of alumina powder and up to 7.5 wt. per cent of finely chopped ceramic fibre, based on total BaCO3 + silicate solution. The fibre may be aluminosilicate. Refractory fibres, which may be as a blanket, may be bonded by the cement to a metal surface, e.g. steel or iron. The refractory fibre may be asbestos, slag wool, or aluminosilicate.
