Abstract
1,117,816. Securing cams &c. on shafts. G.K.N. SCREWS & FASTENERS Ltd. 29 July, 1966 [31 July, 1965], No. 32864/65. Heading F2U. A built-up cam-shaft (Fig. 6, not shown) for I.C. engines, comprises a tube 20 on which is arranged one or more profiled cams 10, bearing sleeves (15, 21, 22), fuel pump eccentric (23) and, if required, gear-wheels (not shown), each having a splined bore 12, 16 &c., the tube 20 being outwardly deformed by, as shown, a mandrel 24, 25, or hydraulic pressure or by explosion-forming whereby the splined bores 12 become embedded in the wall of the tube (Fig. 5, not shown). One or more axial ribs (not shown) may be provided on the tube to facilitate correct angular location of the cams &c., having corresponding keyways, prior to the tube deforming operation, after which assembly, the cams 10, bearing sleeves &c., all of which may be of differing materials, are finish ground.
