Abstract

Electrostatographic toner particles are prepared by forming a plurality of surfactant micelles in an aqueous medium (preferably before the addition of monomer) and providing in the medium, in the presence of a water-soluble polymerization catalyst, a sufficient supply of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer to form a suspension of surfactant encapsulated polymer particles of average size 0.01-50 microns in diameter and with the majority of particles having a diameter within \sB10% of the mean, by preferential diffusion of monomer to the smallest of the particles during polymerization, adding to the suspension a dye capable of colouring the particles and then separating the particles from the suspension, e.g. by spray drying. In examples vinyl chloride or a mixture of styrene and n-butyl methacrylate or butadiene is polymerized in an aq. emulsion containing sodium N - methyl - N - oleyl - taurate, potassium or ammonium persulphate, sodium sulphite and sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate. The dye may be cosine blue or acridine yellow. The monomer and surfactant may be added during polymerization.
