Abstract

Ferrous products 7, e.g. pre-reduced pellets, scrap iron, iron powder, are melted in an electric arc furnace 1 where the arc is struck between three graphite electrodes such as 2a, 2b and a liquid metal bath 4b, the products 7 being continuously introduced to form and maintain a solid stabilizing mass 9 between the arcs, and the temperature of the bath 4b, being continuously measured and carbon, e.g. graphite, coal coke, paraffin coke, pig iron, accordingly added thereto to maintain the temperature and the carbon content of the bath each between two predetermined limits. Carbon is <PICT:1116268/C6-C7/1> added in pieces or is blown as dust through a nozzle 11. The temperature is measured by a rhodiated Pt-Pt thermocouple 12.
