Abstract
1,116,266. Sewing machines. SINGER CO. 31 Jan., 1967 [3 Feb., 1966], No. 4558/67. Heading DIG. A sewing machine comprises a frame formed with two accurately machined surfaces spaced apart from each other, a first and second module mounted one on each of said surfaces for arranging respective stitch-forming means comprised in said modules in co-operative stitchforming relationship, a third module mounted on the frame at a distance from said surfaces, and means operatively connecting a driven actuating element comprised in said third module with at least one of said stitch-forming means. The sewing machine has a U-shaped frame member 11 with an upper arm 15 having at its free end a machined cylindrical portion 18 to which a needle module 12 is detachably secured, a lower arm 16 having at its free end a flat machined surface 19 to which a looptaker module 13 is detachably secured, and a vertical connecting portion 17 to which an actuating and control module 14 is detachably secured. A block 30 is secured to arm 16 by a screw 29, and is also secured by screws to a base 250. Needle module 12 comprises a support plate 40 carrying a block 41 formed with a bore 42 which receives portion 18 and is secured in adjusted angular and axial position relatively thereto by a set screw 44. A U-shaped bracket fixed to plate 40 has upper and lower arms 46, 47 supporting a sleeve 48 slidably receiving a needle bar 49, to the upper end of which is fixed a pivot pin 52 co-axially carrying a roller 53 engaged in a vertical slot (54) formed in plate 40. A stub shaft 57 has a spherical end portion 56 which is journalled in a spherical bearing aperture 55 formed in plate 40, and which is held therein by a leaf spring 61. A drive shaft 200 is releasably secured by a screw 202 in a bore 58 formed in stub shaft 57. A crank arm 59 on the latter is pivoted at 62 to one end of a link 63. the other end of which is pivoted on pin 52. An arm 65, extending laterally from said other end of link 63, is formed at its free end with a thread take-up eyelet 66. The distance between eyelet 66 and pivot 52 is twice the distance between the pivots 52. 62. It is stated that. in this arrangement. eyelets 66 moves in a path substantially parallel to the axis of the needle bar 49. A plate 80 fixed to the arms 46. 47 carries a thread tensioner 81. a post (86) adjacent tensioner 81 and formed with a thread-guiding eyelet (85) and a thread-guiding eyelet 87 adjacent the needle 51. The looptaker module 13 comprises a support plate 100 which is secured by two screws 101, (102) to the surface 19, and which supports a looptaker assembly 104 and a feed assembly 105. Assembly 104 comprises upper and lower plates 106, 107 interconnected by a post 108. Plate 106 is supported by plate 100 and is pivoted thereto by a stud 110 which enters a post 109 fixed to plate 107. A spring 112 acts on post 108 to bias an abutment (113) on plate 106 against the shank of screw 101. A pin 125, fixed to plate 107, journals a pulley 123 rigid with a multi-beak rotary hook 120 of the kind described in Specification 1,078.797. A leaf spring 153, anchored to plate 106, bears on the bobbin holder (136) to hold the latter within the rotary hook 104. Assembly 105 comprises a U-shaped bracket having a base 165 secured in spaced relation to plate 100 by posts 166, and arms 164 journalling a shaft 163. A crank arm 162 on shaft 163 is pivotally engaged at its free end in a groove 161 formed at one end of a feed dog 160, the other end of which is slidably supported on plate 100. A pin 169, slidable vertically in plate 100 and base 165, carries a throat plate 167 having apertures 168 for the feed dog teeth and a needlepassing aperture 168'. A lever 173 is pivoted at one end at 172 to pin 169, and is pivoted intermediately at 174 to a roller 175 located between thereby such that oscillation of shaft 163 causes plate 100 and base 165. The arrangement is reciprocation of feed dog 160, and oscillation of lever 173 raises and lowers throat plate 167 to cover and uncover the feed dog teeth. The actuating and control module 14 comprises a support plate 180 secured by screws 22, (23 to the upright 17. A spherical bearing aperture 181 in plate 180 journals a spherical portion 183 of a bush 182 which journals shaft 200, the spherical surfaces being held together by a leaf spring 185. A hut 205, fixed by a screw 204 to shaft 200, carries a hand wheel 208 formed with belt grooves 209, 210. Groove 209 is connected by a belt 211 to the pulley 212 of a motor 213 mounted on a bracket (214) fixed to plate 180. Groove 210 is connected by a belt 216. via idler pulleys 217, 218 mounted on plate 180, to pulley 123 for driving the looptaker. An eccentric portion of hub 265 journals eccentric straps 220, 221. Strap 220 has a downwardly-projecting arm pivoted to the upper end of a bar 223 provided at the upper end with a pin 222 slidable in a vertical slot 224 formed in plate 180. The lower end of bar 223 carries a vertically-adjustable abutment 226. Lever 173 passes through a vertical slot 231 in plate 180 and is biased by a spring 232 against abutment 226, whereby rotation of handwheel 208 serves to oscillate lever 173. Shaft 163 is journalled in plate 180 and carries a laterally-projecting crank arm 240. Eccentric strap 221 also carries a laterally-projecting arm connected by a pivot pin (244) to one end of a link (242) the other end of which is pivoted to arm 240. Pin (244) journals a block (245) slidable in a groove (189) formed diametrically in a disc (188) carried by a pin (186) which is journalled in plate 180 and is rigid with a lever arm 187. Rotation of handwheel 208 thereby serves to oscillate shaft 163. and manipulation of arm 187 to turn disc (188) serves to vary the rate and direction of work feed.
