Abstract
1,115,795. Electric resistance furnaces. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. 17 May, 1966 [17 May, 1965], No. 20717/65. Heading H5H. A furnace unit comprises a reflector 11 and means 17 for supporting the end seals of a heater element 13 to maintain the seals at a high temperature. The heater comprises a W filament in a quartz envelope enclosing a N 2 - I 2 atmosphere. The reflector 11, comprising parts 23, 24, 25, is water-cooled and has an anodized A1 parabolic or elliptical reflecting surface 12. The mouth of the reflector is covered by a window except at the ends which are closed by a radiation shield 19. The heater is supported by glazed, platinized refractory members 18 extending between the surface 12 and the shield 19. A number of such units may be grouped together.
