An indicator bolt fastening device comprises a bolt and handle assembly adapted to be secured to the inside face of a door of an apartment, an indicator assembly adapted to be secured to the other side of the door to display an appropriate word such as "engaged" or "vacant" of a sign and coupling means to operatively connect these assemblies together so that operation of the handle to move the bolt will also change the word displayed the bolt and handle assembly comprising a casing 2 provided with fixing holes 3 which slidably carries a bolt 4 operatively connected with a bolt operating shaft 1 which shaft is rotatably secured in the casing, and a flanged cover plate 15 which is fitted to the casing to obscure the screw holes therein and which is provided with a captive but relatively rotatable handle 16 adapted to engage one end portion of the said shaft for rotative coupling therewith. In the construction shown the shaft 1 is mounted in a circular bearing hole in the front of the casing 2 and has a flange which prevents rearward axial movement; inside the casing a washer 13 is received on the shaft and a split pin 12 passes through the shaft to hold the washer in contact with the inside of the front wall of the casing. The split pin also holds a T-shaped member in a diametral slot in the shaft 1, the T-shaped member being part of a coupling means, as described in Specification 1115502, by which the bolt and handle assembly is coupled to the indicator assembly. The T shaped member also provides two arms 6 and 8, the arm 6 engaging in a notch 7 in the bolt to move a bolt and the arm 8 engaging the flanges of the casing to limit the rotation of the shaft 1 and the movement of the bolt. The bolt passes through slots 5 in the opposite side flanges of the casing 2 and through cut-outs in the cover plate 15. The handle 16 is mounted on a stub shaft 17 which rotatably engages in a bearing hole in the cover plate, its end portion being spun over washer 19 located against the rear face of the cover plate to maintain the handle in position. The inner end portion of the stub shaft has an axial recess 18 of square section which is engageable with a square end portion of the shaft 1 when the cover plate is forced into contact with the casing 2.
