Abstract

1,113,870. Lamp failure alarm; vehicle signalling systems. TUNG-SOL INDUSTRIES Inc. 28 Oct., 1965 [30 Oct., 1964], No. 45679/65. Headings G4N and G4Q. A vehicle signalling system includes a relay with two windings so connected in the circuit that failure of a signal lamp upsets the current balance in the relay allowing it to energize giving a lamp failure indication. As shown in Fig. 3, actuation of switch 48 to signal a left turn, say, completes the circuit between flasher contacts 16 and indicators 54L, 56L via relay winding 28, and between flasher contacts 16 and pilot lamp 60 via relay winding 32, the ampere turns of the two windings being equal. Failure of one of the lamps 54L, 56L allows the relay to energize, opening contacts 26 in the pilot lamp circuit. Pilot lamp 62 similarly monitors right-turn lamps 54R, 56R. For emergency operation the switch 48 is actuated to the leftturn position, and emergency switch 92 is actuated completing the right-turn circuit. Both pilot lamps are thus in parallel maintaining the current balance in the relay windings. For daytime use, switch 58 is closed, connecting an extra lamp filament in the rear turn indicator lamp 56L, 56R. Current balance in the relay is maintained by also switching in an extra filament in the corresponding pilot light. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 4 (not shown), the front indicator lamp may be connected to one relay winding, and the rear one to the other, the pilot lamp being connected directly with the flasher via the relay contact 26. The system also includes a brake light switch 42 for actuating the rear lamps.
