Abstract

Novel 6 - methoxy - 8 - (4 - amino - 4 - methylpentylamino) -quinoline and the pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof are prepared by condensation of 1-bromo-4-methyl-4-nitro - pentane with 6 - methoxy - 8 - aminoquinoline, followed by hydrogenation of the resulting 6 - methoxy - 8 - (4 - methyl - 4 - nitropentylamino) - quinoline monohydrobromide and optional conversion of the product to a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof. Pharmaceutical compositions, having anti-inflammatory and anti-amebic activity and being useful in the treatment of malarial infections, comprise 6 - methoxy - 8 - (4 - amino 4 - methyl - pentylamino) - quinoline or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof as active ingredient, together with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. 1 - Bromo - 4 - methyl - 4 - nitropentane is prepared by reduction of ethyl 4-methyl-4-nitrovalerate, followed by treatment of the resulting 4 - methyl - 4 - nitro - 1 - pentanol with phosphorus tribromide.
