An asymmetric rotating disc contactor, particularly for contacting counterflowing liquids, has built-in trays 2 and a vertical shell insert 3 extending coaxially the length of the contactor which divides the contactor into an agitating space containing the rotating discs and a settling space, each tray 2 having a sector like recess forming a sector like space extending the length of the contactor through which the insert is removable as is the shaft 5 carrying the discs. Figure 4 shows the insertion of the shell insert 3 which carries sectorlike trays 4, the agitator shaft having been already inserted with its agitating discs positioned between adjacent trays 2. Horizontal partitions 6 are arranged in the remaining free space between the insert and the adjacent column wall, one partition on the level of each disc. The discs may be cone shaped and may be grooved.
