Abstract

Organic fibres particularly natural and synthetic polyamides but also cellulose acetates, aromatic polyesters, acrylonitrile polymers, polyurethanes and polyolefins are dyed by impregnating them below the drawing temperature of the dyestuffs with an aqueous liquor containing an acid dye, 1-70% of organic acid (based on the wt. of liquor) and anionic surfactant optionally admixed with a non-ionic surfactant, squeezing the fibres, leaving them in a humid condition at room temperature to at most 50 DEG C and then rinsing. The preferred acid content is 40-70% the acids p preferred being formic and acetic. As anionic surfactants there are specified (a) water-soluble salts of optionally substituted aliphatic monocarboxylic acids having at least one lipophilic radical, (b) sulphated amides of acids as in (a) with hydroxyalkylamines or soluble salts thereof, (c) sulphated 1-alkylphenoxy-2, 3-dihydroxypropanes whose alkyls have 8-12 C or soluble salts thereof or (d) sulphated polyglycol ethers or soluble salts thereof or mixtures of a, b, c and/or d. The specified nonionic surfactants are unsulphated (b) or (d) or unsulphated esters of acids as in (a) with hydroxyalkylamines or mixtures thereof. The dye liquors may also contain thickeners and bactericidal, fungicidal or mothproofing agents. Examples are given.
