Abstract

Nylon or proteinaceous (e.g. wool or chlorinated wool) textile materials are dyed with high affinity milling colours from a dye bath containing a substituted guanidine (or salt thereof) of the formula <FORM:0812852/IV (c)/1> wherein R1, R2 and R3 (which may be the same or different) represent hydrogen atoms, monocyclic aromatic radicals, aliphatic radicals or cycloalkyl radicals and R4 represents a monocyclic aromatic radical or an aliphatic or cycloalkyl radical. Suitable guanidines are sym-diphenylguanidine, sym-o-ditolylguanidine, a ,a ,g ,g -tetramethylguanidine, a ,a -diphenylguanidine, a -phenylguanidine, sym-dibenzylguanidine, a -cyclohexylguanidine and a -dodecylguanidine. The guanidine is preferably dissolved in an anionic or non-ionic dispersing agent, such as sulphonated castor oil, sodium-1-isobutyl-4-ethyloctyl sulphate, the mono-p-nonylphenyl ether of hexaethylene glycol or the sodium - mono - p - octylphenyl ether of diethylene glycol sulphate, and the solution added to the dyebath. The pH of the bath may be lowered during the dyeing process by the initial addition of an acid-producing salt such as ammonium acetate, ammonium sulphate or diammonium phosphate, and when necessary, exhaustion may be completed by the addition of an acid, e.g. acetic, propionic, hydrochloric or sulphuric acid. Examples are given.
