Abstract

1,108,168. Making tampons. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. 13 Aug., 1965 [24 Nov., 1964], No. 34766/65. Heading A5R. [Also in Division D1] A tampon comprises an uncompressed bundle of continuous funicular elements extending from one end of the tampon to the other, which have been wet-crosslinked while deformed, with subsequent removal of the deformation and drying, so that they are straight and aligned in the dry state but become crimped, deformed or textured upon wetting. A "funicular element" is defined as being any cord-like or fibrous structure, such as single continuous filaments or yarns of long synthetic or short staple fibres. The tampon is made by subjecting such elements to a bulking, crimping, texturing or deforming operation, then effecting a wet crosslinking process, stretching or otherwise returning the so-treated element to its original form before, during, or after drying (i.e. removing the crimp), aligning the elements into a bundle of indefinite length, cutting the bundle at intervals of twice the length of the tampon, and tying with a removal string at the centre; the tied bundle is then folded in half to form the tampon, as shown in the drawing. The tampon may be enclosed in a conventional cylinder and plunger type applicator.
