Abstract

A tow comprises a flattened bundle of parallel, crimped, continuous filaments which is splittable e.g. by abruptly applied tension, along its length, without appreciable filament rupture, into two or more narrow bundles in which the constituent filaments are so intermingled that the bundles resist further splitting. The two may be produced by passing, side by side and in edge to edge contact, two or more flattened bundles of generally parallel but intermingled filaments e.g. as made by the process described in Specification 1,105,130, through a stuffer-box crimper to form a unitary crimped tow having crimps in registry across the width thereof. Each tow formed by splitting the main tow may be passed through a separate opening and crimp deregistering apparatus, such as described in Specification 1,001,813, then through spreaders to form lightweight webs.
